In 1983 a faculty member in an interdisciplinary
humanities and science study program at Virginia tech,
spent time examining the ethical, historical
and public aspects of genetics. DNA tests, are capable
of examining the genetic material itself.
Our biggest fear is that DNA testing will one day be
used against us.
There is a great fear, and with good reason, past
experience shows that.... With the new forms of DNA
testing for certain disorders and severe illnesses or
for genes that can provide clues about susceptibility
to chronic diseases, if and when, found out about us,
could be used against us again !
What if, Medical Insurance Companies, Employers,
Educational Institutions and even
Government Agencies could get access to this
information what would that mean for us ?
Loss of medical coverage, loss of employment, Maybe
even loss of scholarships and or
grants ! ! !
It could be a true curse....
Think about it, if our government wanted to try to
purify the gene pool where would that leave the rest
of us.. Millions of people are effected with some kind
of genetic disorder, whether they know it or not ! ! !
Genetic testing is a great tool, as long as it's used
to help us and not against us..
DNA testing can be done, and there are preventive
measures that can be taken, if a
disorder is found. The great thing about genetic
testing is if it's discovered in previous
generations, it can, and for some, mean the
difference between life and death if
it's detected early enough.
